Monday's Special

$0.00

Monday sucks. Forever and always – unless it’s gig day.

Guess what? You’re far from being the only one thinking that. I am a professional monday hater and been looking for a way to make it better since I was running around in diapers – I know, I love being dramatic – but I’ve realised with time that when caffeine fails, having a quick shot of live music with your coffee helps you get through the day. Or at least it works for me.

So give it a try, grab yourself some coffee and enjoy right here a shot of live music I’ve dug up this week. We’ve got this !

- Blink 182 // Dammit @ Lollapalooza 2024 -

Still revisiting all the performances that brought me joy this year, and far up at the top of that list is obviously Blink 182 at Lollapalooza – and more specifically Mark being a pink pony club boy (1.18min mark for the  restless).

You do know how much I love when my worlds collide and this one was definitely one hell of a high. Chappell brought me a lot of joy this year, and Blink brought me a lot of joy, well, as far as I can remember. A perfect match for my sorry arse.

These guys are one of these bands at the core of the shaky foundations of my love for punk rock. If you remember your teen years, you know what made you fall for rock music in the first place – part outlet for that angst, part fun and bonkers to take the edge off the bleakness of growing up. Mark, Tom and Travis were definitely the masters at the latest.

Our paths over the years may have diverged and that’s at least one obsession that calmed down but the hit of melancholy I feel when I hear their songs is still the sweetest of all, and the teen in me never fails to smile. As for the adult in me – god when did that happen – the late recognition that there were one or two life lessons in it all after all. Or maybe it was just life. I guess this is growing up. Let yourself loose once in a while, it feels good – with that song in particular.

Dammit will always feel like those excited afternoon scavenging at the record store, the laughs echoing at the skatepark at seeing the boys fall flat on their arses, the late nights on that destroyed couch in that one friend basement where baggy pants were big enough to fit two, the absolute mayhem of the songs being murdered on that low ass drum kit, the smoke in the air and the spilled beer on your shirt and all the broken guitar strings we never picked back up. What a mess. What an absolute joy. What a life.

Young and stupid, living off music, laughter and friendship with all the benefits of turning the worst days of our lives into the best ones without knowing it. Yeah. That was life indeed with Blink 182 around.

Dammit. You bet I still smile about it.

Enjoy.

- Stand Atlantic // LOve U Anyway, philadelphia -

Well guys, this is it.

Summer festivals are starting to drop their line ups for 2025 – and that’s the only thing keeping our sanity from a rapid decline – which means only one thing: concert season is officially over.

I’m a lucky bitch and still riding the high from last week gig but I can feel that even that happy cloud is slowly fading away. The looming numbness waiting for me at the bottom of that descent isn’t exactly appealing, and with the confirmation we had this week of living in a sick sad world once again, I’m afraid that fall is gonna hurt more than planned.

Whine, whine, whine—harder, Jo. Of course I do. It’s Monday after all and everything sucks.

We’re up for some pretty dim months ahead of us in terms of live music but eh,  let’s not dive headfirst into the seasonal depression hype. Been there, done that—the service is terrible and the people even worse. Zero stars, do not recommend.

So in the meantime I thought I’d keep myself happy, and let Youtube come to the rescue.

You know I don’t give up so easily and that’s why I’ve spent the day hunting down all the performances that brought me joy this year. A temporary musical band aid til the rock n roll gods bless us with more shaky videos from the pit that is our happy place and since I’m a very giving and kind person – unless you deserve to fuck off – I’ll share the joy with you.

Starting this week with no other than the good guys from Stand Atlantic. For those who don’t know them yet – I’m starting to take it personally I swear – they’re a talented band from Sydney I’ve found out about through my Pvris obsession and their last album WAS HERE is a freaking delight to the ears.

I’m still to write a full piece about them because damn they sure deserve more than a few words. I did mention Bonnie, their lead singer in another one of those Monday Special but that’s nowhere near enough compared to the joy they bring me.

They’re hot, full of spite and so much fun. I love these guys. How could I not. They’re what pop punk is all about.

Their sound is fresh, their talent is undisputed, and they will definitely make you bop in that work chair of yours – or take a few laps around the block – and on occasion take you off guard and steal a few tears. They’re definitely a band you don’t want to miss. Especially if your bones aren’t cracking at the end of the day. I sure wish they could have been around during my crowd surfing days, you would never have seen me back on my feet.

For old and young and everyone in between, that’s fine, they’ll LOVE U ANYWAY and that’s the statement I picked to beat this monday blues. Sorry about the break up Bonnie, but if that’s any comfort it gave us one hell of a tune to take our own sorrow away. What a joy hit this perf is.  And they have a freaking saxophone on this one. God I swear, a sax makes everything a thousand times better, at all times.

Ha. I could go on a lot longer, they do deserve more words, but it’s Monday after all and before I revert to my grumpy self I’ll stop here and leave you in much better company.

Enjoy.
