I’ve decided to share my favorite queer artists of the moment for this month’s ‘Monday’s specials’ – for reasons you prob heard the karens whine about by now. Well, let me tell you, there’s so much stuff out there it makes it difficult to pick just a few. Thought I’d never see the day? Allefuckinluia.
I don’t know if it’s just the algorithm knowing me too well but when I see my Spotify intimate mix I know I should never trust that shit – so I think it’s safe to say that queer artists are truly thriving lately.
Good for me. And you know what? good for you too, because beyond the always welcomed representation, it most of all fuckin rocks.
And to make my point loud and clear – who better than Towa Bird.
Only stumbled upon her stuff recently with her latest – and absolutely brilliant – cover of MGMT ‘Time to pretend’. As I said not long ago, covers are one of my favorite ways to discover new artists. It’s a great and easy introduction toward someone else’s voice and vibes.
It would have been very ironic of me to not dig a little further – did I say it was brilliant? – and thank fuck I did. Identifying inspirations like Hendrix, Joan Jett or Prince – it was def influences I could get on with and everything was aligning to be a perfect musical match.
But all it really took was that live EP at Terminal 5 to win me over. I know I have no self esteem and turn into a playgirl when it comes to big guitars. Musically speaking, hold your horny horses.
It’s basically everything you need a live EP to be – including a cover of ‘Song 2 ‘ for god’s sake, that should be enough to convince you. Fresh, daring, fun and damn, you can feel the UK in this girl. Let your ears be blessed by that boldness and fight reminiscent of bands like the Sex Pistols – if they could play their instruments – flowing in that sound.
Those songs will leave you feeling halfway between a strong shot of espresso and a wake up slap to the face : alert and ready to take on your day. That’s what I expect of my coffee. And that’s what I expect of my music. It’s a way of life people – up to you if you wanna feel alive.
But it’s not just big guitars – you really thought I was that easy? Jeez. Those songs will rattle your bones alright, but they’re definitely not just raging on the surface of things, they also tackle those deeper feelings of uncertainty and insecurity. A perfect balance between sentiments and fire electrifying riffs. Isn’t that the mark of great rock’n’roll after all ?
It’s only monday so long story short – y’all are just sleeping on her, and not in the nice cuddly way.
I don’t know what you were expecting to find in this post, but you’re probably miles away from what Towa can provide you – which definitely includes a big kick in the arse.
As always, I’m not here to force anything on ya, just merely suggesting. (I’m lying, do it. Do it now.)
So I can only highly recommend you give the full thing a listen, because if you’re a music fan, you know live never fails. Possible side effect, you will be humming ‘Drain me!’ for the rest of the day. Bit gay but eh, it’s pride month after all.
Embrace it.
That’s what I’ll keep doing on my side of the world as well as thanking the rock n roll gods that I stumbled upon her stuff just in time for her debut album ‘American hero’ that is coming out June 28.
Be gay, do crimes, listen to Towa Bird and above all – happy Pride y’all.
