Nova Twins – Parasite & Butterflies

I first heard about Nova Twins by actually hearing Nova Twins. Live. And trust me, I can’t remember an opener that left me with such a lasting slap-in-the-face impression.

It’s been a few years now, and the effect remains the exact same every time I put their songs on. If you haven’t heard about the (not really) twins, I wonder under what pebble you’ve been living. Formed in 2014, the London-based duo – Georgia South and Amy Love – have basically been blending rock, punk, and electronic influences ever since and creating their own genre-defying hybrid rock sound. They’re definitely worth a listen, and look at this perfect timing  because… (smooth Jo)

The queens are back for more, promising a duality: chaos and beauty – that’s how they’ve described their third album. And if you know even the basics of the butterfly effect, you’ll quickly see that this is yet another thing Nova Twins have mastered on this one. They’ve managed to harness entropy, transforming it into pure ecstasy.

The album kicks off with GLORY, where the intro crawls under your skin, building tension until that fast beat drops, showing you exactly where this is headed. That ethereal chorus feels like a hymn, and those high-range vocals take you straight to church. Let’s embrace the heresy and join in as the big guitars bring the heavy bridge, crashing into chaos with all their might. Oh, glorious indeed. And that’s just the opener. Can you feel the fire building?

Next comes PIRANHA, and darkness suddenly seeps from every corner, carried by a sticky, dirty sound. There’s definitely something in the water, and it feels filthy as hell. Georgia’s thunderous bass keeps the pressure high while the guitars dance or battle, either way, never letting the tension subside. The commanding vocals bring balance, transforming the darkness into pure empowerment. I’m not sure what war Nova Twins are waging here, but spoiler alert: they’re definitely winning.

Then they bring MONSTERS, which ironically feels lighter. This track is a total bop, blending genres seamlessly. Picture modern-day hip-hop with its half-puffed rap, classic hard rock melodic vocals, and a dash of Georgia’s bass magic before giving it all a good shake.

Soon enough, it’s time to let the vibes take over with SOPRANO, a personal standout. That hook? Unstoppable. I dare you to stand still while listening to this one and resist the voodoo-like power overtaking you. This one’s all butterflies, not parasites—pure joy, perfectly timed to wash away the heaviness of the previous tracks.

That lightness accelerates into sassy high energy with DRIP. Sometimes, it’s just about having fun, right? Right. The only stickiness here is how that chorus is going to drill into your brain for the rest of the day.

Let’s take the party up a notch with N.O.V.A., hitting you straight away with an irresistible bouncing rhythm and a compelling chorus that was undoubtedly crafted for large crowds. I can’t wait to scream this back from the pit. Once again, this is a full-body experience—don’t fight it, babe. You’ve got to dance.

SANDMAN slows things down slightly, taking a darker turn with perfect timing. Nova Twins truly find the right balance between beauty and chaos here, juggling those polar opposites with masterful craftsmanship. It’s a different kind of party. Let that dark groove and sugary vocals entice you.

Then we hit the eye of the storm with HUMMINGBIRD, a haunting interlude. Everything seems to stop. It will definitely stop you in your tracks, too. It’s like the aftermath of tragedy—a sense of grief takes over. The production is absolutely beautiful, showing a more vulnerable side of the Twins. But from this chaos, beauty is born again. That powerful bridge feels like a cleanse, a promise of fairer winds ahead.

We come crashing back with PARALLEL UNIVERSE, where two completely different sets of vocals start a conversation. There’s grit here, a push and pull between release and restraint. That bass progression will grab your attention and almost force you to listen. The song wrestles with its own duality—a constant dance between opposing forces, never quite finding peace but creating something beautiful out of the tension. Darkness is everywhere, but so is the light.

Next up is HIDE&SEEK, bringing a disturbingly playful edge. It’s like a game where the rules are never clear and the stakes are much higher than you thought. Harmless? Definitely not. There’s an irresistible, sick pleasure in this one. That pre-chorus is absolutely infectious. You’ll be hooked, even if you’re not sure you should be. But there’s no escape – game on.

HURRICANE kicks off with an intro that sounds the alarm: the game has turned into one of survival. That bass line will put all your senses on red alert, forcing you to stop running and start marching. Even though that song oozes tension, the struggle quickly turns into a feat of strength, reminding you that no matter the storm, you can weather it. You’re going to come out stronger – and this track ensures you will.

And finally, we reach BLACK ROSES, the closer. Will it be butterflies or parasites? Or maybe it’s both? And maybe it’s been the case all along. With a final roar of sassy strength, Nova Twins leave you with a sense of invincibility – a power surge that will stay with you long after the music fades. A declaration that no matter the chaos, Nova Twins are here to stay, and they’re not going anywhere (thank fuck). Black roses, so deadly… If this is the poison they offer, I’ll take it gladly and drink every drop.

And maybe that’s the key. Maybe all beauty is born from chaos. To embrace who we are, we must sometimes survive sipping the poison. That last track feels like their victory lap, and we’re all invited to celebrate.

Honestly, this entire album feels like a resilient triumph. All the struggles, all the darkness, all the chaos—but in every single track, there’s a defiant urge to fight back. And that’s perfectly on brand with Nova Twins. Badass, sassy, defiant.

Black roses, alright. Evolving. Adapting. Tenacious. Beautiful. Deadly.

Deadly good. As always.

Nova Twins are currently touring in Europe before their UK tour starting in October.
