If you still haven’t accepted your invitation to The Last Dinner Party I’m not sure what to tell you anymore. The celebrations have been well underway for the past year or so in this house and I’ve probably been yapping about them enough to give you quite an indigestion. With that said, sorry not sorry but I’m nowhere near done with it and won’t let you miss the best serve of the year.
Their debut album Prelude To Ecstasy is part of my top 3 albums of 2024 and hearing these guys play it in full live a few months ago has definitely been one of the highlights of my year – that review is on the top of my draft pile and I can’t wait for life to stop adulting for a minute to get back to it.
A lot of words – at least mine – are never good enough to convince you of anything and that’s why I usually let the music speak louder than my sorry arse. Well let’s try it again then.
Here’s the thing I’ve noticed babbling every week about odd bands. Most people, maybe less so those who still risk venturing these parts, are creatures of habits, and that’s especially flagrant when it comes to music.
I know, I get it, it can be hard to abandon those old playlists of yours for a few and try something new, but let’s compromise shall we?
And the best way to do so is my favorite trick to get you to diversify your musical diet – It’s cover monday again y’all !
And I won’t let down that refined palate of yours with this one trust me – I’m French after all, I know a thing or two about good food (for the soul). On the menu today, I give you the latest drop of Like A Version – and if you’re not familiar with these, I highly recommend you give Triple J YT channel a go and feast on their amazing collection of cover songs.
A cover and a good one at that – Call me by Blondie.
Don’t tell me I don’t have taste now and a certain ear when it comes to hyping up your monday morning – I’m not sure this forever damned day of the week can ever get more fun than by blasting that song.
See? That’s familiar, no need to be scared and run back to your old ways. You might know that song, but trust me, you don’t know THAT song.
This one even though toying with your sweet sweet memories will definitely introduce you to the TLDP touch and vibes.
Vibes, or more so energy, because these guys are not short of either. Sexy, skilled, powerful – even more so, empowering – energy transpires from this fire homage to Blondie. And I, for one, isn’t surprised because if I were to describe this band’s trademark, that’s probably the adjectives I would use.
I’ll admit that I got half a second of doubt when I first saw that embedded miniature show up on my feed. I wasn’t expecting Abigail’s voice to work with that song to be completely honest. Yeah, well, I probably forgot who I was talking about, and I’ll deflect that wrong on my numb brain lacking caffeine for a change.
Abigail’s voice works alright. Abigail’s voice works actually so well, it feels like she’s legit possessed by the song’s vibes at times, and that’s probably because she didn’t try to be Debbie Harry.
She just reclaimed that spirit as her own. ‘Just’ probably isn’t a very fair word. And that’s probably the reason why I’m writing shit on a dark corner of the internet while these guys are on their way to become the soundtrack of a generation. For real. Go try harnessing a legend’s spirit and make it sound new in your own voice. Take a song everyone knows and get people to think ‘oh that sounds like a TLDP song for sure’.
Ha. Talent. Right there.
And that’s how you get a good cover folks – not with a textbook copy of it, but by adding your own touch to it and reinventing what is already there. That’s the best kind of version in my book.
You know the song. You love the song.
Well guess what, you now love that song twice.
And you found a new fav along the way to add to that old playlist of yours. See? That wasn’t too hard after all.
Enjoy the party – could be our last but damn, it might well last forever.
